WINDOWS 95 - ERROR MESSAGES / BLACK OR FLICKERING SCREEN / PAGE FAULTS

El-Fish is a DOS game written before the release of Windows 95.  Due to the differences in operating environments, Windows 95 may not run the game appropriately.  It is recommended that you enter MS-DOS Mode by clicking on Start, selecting the Shut Down option, then Restart in MS-DOS Mode. Once in MS-DOS mode, follow the instructions in the manual to install and launch the game.

If you are receiving any of the above errors, it is a good indication of faulty diskettes.  Information regarding disk replacement is available from our Warranty Department. (No-longer available)

EXPANDED MEMORY MANAGER PRESENT - PROTECTED MODE COULD NOT BE ENTERED

El-Fish provides its own memory management and will not run with and Expanded Memory Manager (EMM386) active in memory.  We recommend creating a boot disk.  After the Expanded Memory Manager has been removed, El-Fish should run fine.

TOO MANY FILES OPEN

El-Fish requires your DOS configuration to have at least 30 file handlers.  When manually editing your CONFIG.SYS file, make sure the line Files=30 is present. If the value of Files is below 30, increase it appropriately.

XTRACE ERROR

Receiving this error usually means that a driver or program in your configuration is causing a conflict with El-Fish.  We recommend creating a boot disk.

INSTALL ABORTS OR TAKES TOO LONG TO COMPLETE

If you are attempting to install under Windows 95, try restarting in MS-DOS Mode.  El-Fish was made prior to the release of Windows 95 and works best in a DOS environment.  If installation from DOS is still causing problems, this is likely due to a program in your configuration file causing a conflict.  At this point we recommend creating a boot disk.

VIDEO PROBLEMS

El-Fish is translated directly from the original code first published years ago in Russia.  Due to the differences in Russian video technology, El-Fish uses a high resolution video mode which may not work correctly on all computers.  A more compatible video mode option is available with the updated version of El-Fish.  After downloading the update file EF480.EXE, place a blank disk into your floppy drive and type the command EF480 -D A: (or use a B: if your 3.5" floppy drive is B:) and press enter.  Launching the update in this way will create a new El-Fish disk 1.  Once completed, type INST_480 at the floppy drive prompt to re-install the game with the new resolution.

DIFFICULTIES RUNNING EL-FISH ON A PENTIUM COMPATIBLE SYSTEM

El-Fish is an older program written before the release of the Pentium processor.  Running the original version on a Pentium compatible system can cause lock-ups, video problems, sound problems, and other difficulties.  Eliminating these problems requires a Pentium compatible version of El-Fish which is now available for exchange.  More information on exchanging disks is available in our Warranty section. (No-longer available)
